A fim de capturar um perigoso Serial-killer, conhecido como "Buffalo Bill", a agente do FBI, Clarice Starling, é recrutada para obter pistas sobre o assassino em série que está fazendo vítimas, esfolando-as. Tudo está vinculado à uma mariposa / borboleta, símbolo da mutação ou evolução, algo peculiar ao perfil do assassino.
